Installing a fence on top of a retaining wall isn't a straightforward job. You've got elevation changes, masonry surfaces, and the need to make everything look intentional - not just functional. That's exactly what we were working with on this Demarest, NJ project.

The retaining wall here is stacked concrete block, two courses high, running the full length of the property boundary. Mounting a fence directly to the top of that wall requires precise post placement and solid anchoring so nothing shifts over time. We take that seriously. A fence that leans or shifts after one winter is a fence that wasn't installed right.

We went with a decorative black aluminum fence for this one. Aluminum is a great fit for a setup like this - it's lightweight enough not to stress the wall, holds up against rust and weather, and the black finish gives it a sharp, finished look that adds real curb appeal. The decorative detail along the top rail ties everything together nicely.

What we ended up with is a setup that does two things well: it secures the elevated yard and it looks good doing it. In a denser neighborhood like this, where your property is visible from multiple angles, that kind of dual purpose matters. Security and aesthetics don't have to compete with each other.

Custom fencing situations like this one - where the terrain or existing structures add complexity - are where experience shows. Every property is different, and getting the install right means thinking through the details before the first post goes in.
